Chapter 10

Raina

January 1998

Lottie is getting married. She only met the man five weeks ago and swears she’s in love! I told her she doesn’t know him well enough to love him; she’s barely eighteen and has her whole life ahead of her, hasn’t even graduated high school yet. She not-so-kindly reminded me how early I married and had kids. She’s got babies on the mind worse than I ever did. She swears she’ll finish school, but she’s already missed twenty-three days. She’s too eager and naïve for love and a family, so it doesn’t matter what I say. In fact, my objecting to her marriage is probably why she’s made up her mind. She hates me! Ever since Earl left, she won’t listen to reason, especially from me...

Earl leaving is my fault. I can’t deny that. It eats me apart every damn day! He left a gaping hole in my chest when he left, but I granted him the divorce he wanted. After what I did, it was the least I could do. Totius never came for us, but in a moment of desperation I shifted and cornered Earl, ready to turn him. I was going to do it, but the look of betrayal in his eyes, the hurt, stopped me. I couldn’t go through with it. But in going so far, I lost every ounce of trust we had built over the years, and he left me. He kissed me tenderly on the lips and told me he still loves me. But he wished he didn’t because loving me brought only pain. And he couldn’t bear to look at me any longer.

Lottie saw me change, saw too much of that side of me, and now, I am nothing more than the woman who tore apart her home. Worse, she blames it on my being a wolf and says she wants nothing to do with that part of my life. She says her children will never know of their heritage.

Totius will still come eventually. I know it, but I should’ve stuck with my plan to build a pack the natural way.

I don’t have the heart to tell Lottie her precious fiancé, Abel, is also a wolf. I brought up the topic of werewolves the other day, asking if she would ever consider being with one. She shut me down with a quickness and told me if I ever brought it up again, she would never speak to me. But Abel is a wolf, and he knows I know what he is. I could smell the wolf on him the moment we met. It was stronger than the presence of any other wolf I’ve encountered. He has strong genes, so despite Lottie being human, I know she could have little wolves.

I decided to make the most of the situation, knowing full well she may hate me for it later, but it’s in her best interest and the best interest of the family. I mapped it all out. Lottie will be fertile the day of the wedding.
